12 Step Recovery Circle and Yoga Practice

  • Your Yoga Louisville 3026 Bardstown Road Louisville USA (map)

The stated purpose of “Recovery Yoga” is to enhance the 12-step process of healing and recovery through a Mind-Body-Spirit approach.

It will begin with a recovery circle, where recovery topics and a study of the Yamas & Niyamas as they apply to recovery, will be discussed. The circle will be open – friends and family of those in recovery are welcome. Anonymity, as well as the sacredness of the circle will be maintained; what is said in the circle will stay in the circle. General 12-step meeting rules will be applied. Every person participating will be treated with dignity and respect.

After the circle a guided meditation and a yoga class will take place where the style of yoga taught will rotate through each of the following: Vinyasa, Hatha, Yin, or Restorative yoga depending on the energy and needs of the participants. The classes will include “hands-on” adjustments, which is important for the members in recovery as there is a true healing power in touch, and those suffering from addiction and/or in early recovery are often withdrawn to the point of unknowingly craving human touch.

Jim Apone will be guiding this program every month.  Jim grew up in a household of alcohol addiction and overcame his own addiction to alcohol 11 years ago. He feels that yoga is a natural extension of recovery for those in addiction, as well as those touched by the disease of addiction of friends and family.  His inclusive approach helps to build a strong network for extended recovery.
